Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate how much flooring I need?
Multiply your room length (ft) × width (ft) to get the net square footage. Then add a wastage factor — typically 10% — for cuts, mistakes, and future repairs. Divide by the coverage per box to find how many boxes to buy.
How many sq ft does a box of tile cover?
It varies by tile size. A box of 12×12 tiles typically contains 10–15 tiles covering about 10–15 sq ft. Larger tiles like 18×18 or 24×24 come in boxes covering 15–20 sq ft. Always check the box label — our calculator uses 12 sq ft/box for ceramic and 15 sq ft/box for porcelain as standards.
How much thinset adhesive do I need for tile?
A standard 50 lb bag of thinset mortar covers approximately 40–50 sq ft at ¼" depth with a notched trowel. Our calculator estimates 1 bag per 40 sq ft of tile area to be safe for most residential projects.
Why should I add 10–15% waste factor?
Walls are never perfectly square, cuts waste partial tiles or planks, and you'll want leftover material for future repairs when the product is discontinued. For diagonal patterns add 15%, for complex rooms with lots of angles add 15%, for simple rectangular spaces 5–10% is fine.
How is carpet sold in the US?
Carpet is typically sold in square yards (1 sq yd = 9 sq ft) in the US. Standard carpet rolls come in 12-foot wide broadloom. When you get a quote, always ask for the price per square yard. Our calculator converts your room area to both sq ft and sq yards for easy comparison shopping.
Does LVP need adhesive or underlayment?
Most modern LVP (Luxury Vinyl Plank) is a floating click-lock system that doesn't require adhesive. Many LVP products come with pre-attached underlayment. If yours doesn't, budget for a separate foam or cork underlayment at roughly 0.25–0.50 per sq ft. Glue-down LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) is a different product that does require adhesive.
